Join Us in Strengthening Civic Education Across Indiana
The Indiana Bar Foundation offers exciting volunteer opportunities for individuals eager to support civic learning and student development through two flagship programs:
-

We The People
A nationally recognized instructional initiative for elementary, middle, and high school students, this program brings constitutional history and principles to life. Through simulated U.S. congressional hearings, teams act as expert witnesses, defending constitutional positions before volunteer judges—including attorneys, judges, educators, engaged citizens, and civic leaders—who evaluate their responses. Volunteers serve as judges or facilitators, helping guide students as they build confidence, sharpen research and oral presentation skills, and deepen their understanding of the Constitution. The 2025 We the People competition dates and registration are now live, learn more here.
-

Mock Trial
Mock Trial immerses high school students in the workings of the judicial system by having them role-play attorneys and witnesses in both criminal and civil case scenarios. Participants craft legal arguments, present evidence, and engage in courtroom proceedings before panels of volunteer judges. These competitions—held regionally (typically in February) and culminating in a state championship in March—build critical thinking, collaboration, public speaking, and writing skills aligned with state academic and English language arts standards. Volunteers can serve as judges, scorers, or case discussion facilitators. While we especially need judges from the legal profession, interested parties without law degrees are also welcome to volunteer! The 2026 Mock Trial competition dates are live, learn more here.
