National High School Mock Trial Competition Reflects Four-Year Journey for South Bend Team
South Bend Trinity High School students are in Little Rock, AK, for the 2023 National High School Mock Trial Finals. The Trinity story is one of journeys. The senior team started together as freshmen. Their coach, Hunter Van Asten connected with the group, and they formed a strong bond. Then Van Asten, an attorney, had the opportunity to move to Milwaukee to continue his career. The end of the road? No. A longer road, but not the end. Keeping his promise, Van Asten continued to coach. Zoom and regular trips from Milwaukee to South Bend kept the group together, and success followed.
After winning the State Championship, Van Asten and his team began preparation for the National Finals. The team and their coach met in Illinois to scrimmage with Illinois and Wisconsin teams.
Their journey, a more than 700-mile trip from South Bend to Little Rock, culminated their four-year odyssey most appropriately as Indiana’s representative in the 2023 National High School Mock Trial Championship. In so many ways, no matter how well they perform, Trinity and their coach are already champions.
