Indiana Civics Coalition

Welcome from Indiana Bar Foundation President & CEO Charles Dunlap

Charles DunlapGreetings on behalf of the Indiana Bar Foundation! During the inaugural Indiana Civics Summit, the Foundation announced formation of the Indiana Civics Coalition. The Indiana Civics Coalition (Coalition) was created to be a conduit for civic organizations, colleagues, friends, and fellow citizens who want to be a part of improving our communities through civics and to advance the cause of civics in our state. The Coalition is committed to this cause through:

Awareness – The first principle is bringing more awareness of the organizations who are advancing civic health, education, advocacy, community, etc. in the state. We can work to help make the Coalition organizations become more aware of each other as well as non-coalition organizations to become aware of the coalition. This will allow for more voices in different areas, industries, geography, and more.

Collaboration – A second guiding principle is improving and increasing collaboration among the organizations and individuals in the Coalition.  Organizations and Individuals are often working independently of each other and potentially leaving out partnering and collaborating organizations, potentially limiting work and capacity. Through the Coalition, we can open ways to collaborate with others to increase capacity with additional skill of other groups, thus bringing more good work to the people of Indiana.

Amplification – Finally, a third principle for the Coalition is amplification. There can be more to showcase the work of the Coalition’s members so there is more public knowledge about all the good being done around civics in the state. We can make a better infrastructure of communication, starting with traditional and social media methods, to help each other bolster and bring a spotlight on this work being accomplished by everyone.

Now is a great time to join the Coalition. Membership is open to groups and individuals with a commitment to civics, collaboration, and a desire to expand Indiana’s civic awareness. If you are interested in joining the Indiana Civics Coalition, please complete this form. If you have questions, please contact Director of Civic Education Tim Kalgreen. Groups or individuals wanting to sponsor the Indiana Civics Coalition are encouraged to contact Foundation Director of Development Kim Berry.

The Coalition needs diverse voices and experiences to create a more civic-minded state. Representatives of education, business, the legal community, government, and local communities are Coalition members. Please join us!

Additionally educators and students are encouraged to use this as a comprehensive resource to aid in the teaching and learning of state and local government. Readers will find specific icons throughout the publication indicating the topic’s connection to Indiana’s social studies academic standards.

Foundation Releases 2023 Indiana Civic Health Index Report

According to the 2023 Indiana Civic Health Index (INCHI), to increase the number of Hoosiers registering and voting, the state must invest in educating young people about the importance of voting and encourage eligible students to register. The report was released on January 24, and reviews 2022 midterm election data and documents Indiana’s place among states with the lowest voter registration and turnout rates.

The Indiana Bar Foundation and the Indiana Civics Coalition curated the report, examining various factors, including voting and voter registration, social and community connectivity, and civic awareness and actions.
