Future Hoosier Civic Leaders Shine: We the People Middle and High School State Finalist Schools Announced

December 4, 2024 (INDIANAPOLIS)— Middle and high school Hoosier students statewide have competed in regional We the People competitions hosted by the Indiana Bar Foundation (Foundation) around the state. We the People is an instructional program that teaches students the history and principles of American constitutional democracy and deepens their understanding of government. State competitions will take place on December 10 and 11 in Indianapolis at the Crowne Plaza Indianapolis Downtown Union Station.

Students explore the history, philosophies, application, and evolution of the U.S. Constitution, Bill of Rights, and other founding documents as part of the program. They collaborate in teams to research and analyze historical and contemporary issues, crafting formal statements and defending their positions before a panel of judges in a simulated legislative hearing.

In addition to participating in the state civics competition, on December 10th the middle school students will have an opportunity to witness a naturalization ceremony of approximately 100 individuals being admitted as new citizens of the United States. The naturalization ceremony will be presided over by Indiana Bar Foundation board member Hon. James Sweeney of the United States District Court for the Southern District of Indiana.

  • Castle South Middle School, Newburgh
  • Evansville Day School, Evansville
  • Fall Creek Junior High School, Fishers
  • Fishers Junior High School, Fishers
  • Hobart Middle School, Hobart
  • RJ Baskett Middle School, Gas City
  • Philip Catholic School, Mt. Vernon
  • Richard’s Episcopal School, Indianapolis – Two Classes
  • Vincent de Paul School, Fort Wayne
  • Union Township Middle School, Valparaiso
  • Woodside Middle School, Fort Wayne

These 13 high schools will compete on December 11:

  • Castle High School, Newburgh
  • Evansville North High School, Evansville
  • Fishers High School, Fishers
  • Franklin Central High School, Indianapolis
  • Hamilton Southeastern High School, Fishers
  • Heritage Jr/Sr High School, Monroeville
  • Hobart High School, Hobart
  • Jasper High School, Jasper
  • Mississinewa High School, Gas City
  • New Palestine High School, New Palestine
  • North Posey High School, Poseyville
  • Plainfield High School, Plainfield – Two Classes
  • West Lafayette High School, West Lafayette

The state champions will go on to represent the Hoosier state in the national We the People competitions this spring. The High School We the People National Finals will take place April 9-11 outside of Washington, DC. The Middle School We the People National Invitational will take place via Zoom April 25-26.
